Book 10, Question 84
Why Does Taste Need Saliva?
Taste needs saliva because chemicals in food have to dissolve in liquid to reach your taste buds. Saliva is the watery spit in your mouth. Without it, flavors have trouble getting through, and food can seem bland.
More fun facts
- Saliva is 99 percent water, yet it has a big effect on how food tastes.
- Chemicals from food dissolve in saliva so they can reach your taste buds.
- A sweet or sour molecule can only be tasted if it travels through saliva to a taste bud.
- Saliva wets each bite so it moves smoothly through your mouth.
- Scientists now think saliva acts like a translator between food and your senses.
