Book 1, Question 44

Why Do Cows Have Four Stomach Rooms? A Tiny Teamwork Tummy!

A cow's stomach is a four-room digestion system! Grass is made of tough cellulose, so cows rely on billions of microbes in the rumen, the microbe kitchen, to break it down. Then comes the reticulum, which forms cud, the omasum, which squeezes out extra water, and the abomasum, the true stomach that uses acid and enzymes. The cow chews cud for a second time before it moves on. The page says the rumen can hold more than 100 liters of food and liquid.
